Jaunt VR Production Workflow Walkthrough

Contained herein is a high-level overview of the Jaunt VR production workflow, beginning with shooting 360º stereoscopic video to delivering stitched stereoscopic content.

Prior to shooting your project, you should have the following:

  1. Jaunt ONE kit (camera, mount, microphone, sound recorder, battery, etc.)
  2. Jaunt Cloud Services account - request HERE for your production organization (if you have an existing organization, request an account from your organization administrator)
  3. Download Jaunt Tools via Jaunt Cloud Services
  4. Create additional accounts in Jaunt Cloud Services for your production team

Step-by-step guide

From shooting to viewing:

  1. Equipment Setup and Recording
    1. Setup Jaunt ONE Camera
      • Remove tripod and position in desired location
      • Remove Jaunt ONE camera from carrying case
      • Mount camera to tripod
      • Check camera leveling and adjust
      • Insert 24 SD cards into camera modules
      • Remove lens caps
      • Remove dust/fingerprints/debris from lenses
      • Connect battery/power
    2. Setup Audio Equipment
      • Attach microphone windscreen
      • Clamp microphone to tripod in camera's blind spot directly below the camera's midpoint
      • Position microphone between modules 0 and 15 
      • Position microphone logo to face away from camera
      • Attach audio cables to Tascam Audio recorder and microphone
      • Insert SD card into Tascam Audio recorder
      • Turn on Tascam recorder
      • Format the audio SD card
      • Check and adjust audio levels on Tascam recorder
      • Place Tascam recorder and cables in sling below camera
    3. Final Setup Steps
      • Install and launch Jaunt ONE Controller on the Mac computer
      • Connect USB cable to Jaunt ONE camera and the computer
      • Power on Jaunt ONE camera
      • Format camera SD cards in Jaunt ONE Controller
      • Capture preview image in Jaunt ONE Controller to check Jaunt ONE camera positioning or use Video Feed
      • Adjust camera positioning as needed
      • Close Jaunt ONE Controller
      • Disconnect USB cable
      • Download and install Jaunt Slate from the App Store on an iOS device
      • Launch Jaunt Slate
      • Select 'New Shot' button
      • Enter recording properties and take a picture of the camera setup
    4. Record Video
      • Press Record button on Tascam recorder to start audio recording
      • Press record button on Jaunt ONE handle to start camera recording
      • Increase volume on Jaunt Slate device to maximum
      • Hold Jaunt Slate device between camera and microphone
      • Select the Play button in Jaunt Slate to capture a "chirp" to slate and synchronize video/audio
      • Record the scene
      • Press Pause/Play button on Tascam to stop audio recording
      • Press record button on Jaunt ONE handle to stop video recording
      • Repeat recording and Jaunt Slate steps for each shot
      • Power off Jaunt ONE camera and Tascam recorder
      • Remove SD cards from Jaunt ONE camera modules and Tascam recorder
      • Breakdown Jaunt ONE, Tascam recorder, microphone, tripod, and associated rig equipment for safe storage and transporting
  2. Data Transfer with Jaunt Media Manager
    1. Prepare Jaunt Media Manager For Data
      • Install and launch Jaunt Media Manager
      • Log in to Jaunt Media Manager using a Jaunt Cloud Services account
      • Plug in USB hubs, SD card readers, and external hard drive into the computer
      • Add a Recordings directory to import the recordings to. Select File > Add Recordings Directory. Navigate to the external hard drive and create a project folder.
      • Set the Recordings directory as primary. Select Directory > Set Primary Directory.
    2. Ingest Footage from SD Cards
      • Insert SD cards into SD card readers. Jaunt Media Manager will automatically detect SD card upon insertion and import footage
      • When progress for each SD card reaches 100%, remove the SD card and insert another
      • Repeat above for all 25 SD cards
    3. Organize and Lock Footage
      • Select Recordings directory in Jaunt Media Manager (directory appears on left panel and is highlighted in green)
      • Select File > Organize
      • Recordings will be organized, but need visual verification that all files and data imported correctly
      • After verifying all files and data imported correctly, select Lock button to package video, audio, and metadata
    4. Preview The Footage
      • Select the Render button under the Preview window to create a quickly stitched local render file
      • Install and launch Jaunt Player on the computer
      • In Jaunt Media Manager, select the green camera icon in the Preview window to show the preview render file
      • Drag the preview render file from Jaunt Media Manager into Jaunt Player to review the content
    5. Upload To Cloud
      • Ensure a high-speed broadband internet connection is available for uploading of the footage (if available, using a wired connection is preferred over a wireless connection)
      • Select the recording to upload
      • Select the Upload button
      • Upload status is displayed at the top of the Jaunt Media Manager window or when the Upload tab is selected from the left panel
      • When the upload progress reaches 100%, the recording will be available in Jaunt Cloud Services
  3. Working Within Jaunt Cloud Services
    1. View Uploaded Recording
      • Login to https://cloud.jauntvr.com
      • Select the Project on the homepage
      • Select the uploaded recording within the project to begin viewing
      • Jaunt Cloud Services will automatically create a Preview Quality stitch for all uploaded recordings. If the recording was recently uploaded, the preview stitching process may need additional time to finish before the preview is available for viewing
      • To view a Preview Quality render of the recording, select any of the available clip types (Mono, Stereo, or Web) and press the play button in the viewer window
    2. Create And Edit a Clip
      • To create a new clip from a recording, select the Create Clip link
      • A new clip will appear in the Clips section of the page
      • Select the clip
      • Modify the clip Start and End points as necessary
      • In the High Quality section, select Start to setup a high quality render
      • Make any parameter adjustments and select Start Rendering
      • After submitting for rendering, progress can be viewed by selecting the Tasks along the toolbar
  4. View Content in Jaunt Player
    1. Download the Video File
      • In Jaunt Cloud Services, navigate to the content to view on the computer or head mounted display
      • Select the Download icon for the video
      • The render will download from Jaunt Cloud Services to the computer
    2. View The Video File
      • Install and launch Jaunt Player on the computer
      • Drag the video file from the download location into Jaunt Player
      • Select the Play button to begin video playback
  5. Begin post-production process outside of Jaunt using Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, or other editing tool
